The diverse members of
the aging network are sometimes overwhelmed with the monumental tasks of
helping the elderly and the vulnerable. New resources can be hard to
come by, and there will be a dramatic
growth in the next 20 years in the number of Oregonians 65 and older.
How can the aging network be more effective in advocating
for programs and services
at the state and national level? AARP, one of the largest groups
in the country working on behalf of adults 50+, has been very effective
in promoting policy - but needs all members of the aging network to get
involved. Rick Bennett,
AARP Oregon Director of Government Relations and Jerry Cohen,
State Director of AARP Oregon, will share their expertise and inform
participants about exciting developments!
Rick Bennett is AARP Oregon’s Director of Government Relations.
In this position he serves the interests of Oregon’s 530,000 AARP
members on issues related to state and local governments and leads the
grassroots advocacy efforts related to federal issues.
Prior to his association with AARP, Rick Bennett served as Director of
Government Relations at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) and
also served for four years in the Nevada Legislature.
Jerry Cohen,
since 1996, has served as AARP’s State Director in Oregon, working
with state and national staff, volunteers, membership and partnering
organizations to achieve dignity and choice for people 50+. His
responsibility is to assure that AARP generates the power to make it
better: for value to membership and for positive social change in
community as we age.
