Jennifer H. Allen, Ph.D.
Associate Director for
Sustainable Processes and Practices
Portland State University
Dr. Jennifer H. Allen
is the Associate Director of Portland State University’s Center for
Sustainable Processes and Practices, which
supports multidisciplinary research focused on advancing
understanding of sustainability challenges and opportunities.
Jennifer also serves on the boards
of the Shorebank Pacific, Portland Energy Conservation Inc. and Illahee.
Jennifer has served as Sustainable
Business Liaison with the Oregon Economic and Community Development
Department and as the Executive Vice President of Ecotrust. She worked at
the World Bank between 1987 and 1997 on a range of projects related to
sustainable development in Africa, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Latin
America.
Jennifer holds a Ph.D. in
Environmental Science and Public Policy from George Mason University, a
Masters of Environmental Management from Yale School of Forestry and
Environmental Studies, and a BA in American Studies from Yale University.
Keynote
Presentation
"Making Sustainability Real: Connecting the
Dots between Economy, Environment, and Community"
This presentation will put
concept of sustainability into context for the audience, touching on the
history of sustainable development and the principles of sustainability, why
sustainability is a topic of interest for older persons and those who work
with them, and offering some examples of local and global initiatives to
help make sustainability “real”. The presentation will explore
approaches to thinking about sustainability in practice, and will offer
examples of sustainability in the built environment, the importance of
“social sustainability” considerations, sustainable food systems, and other
topics.
