Michael Mega, M.D., Ph.D., Is the director of the Cognitive Assessment Clinic in the Providence Brain Institute. Dr. Mega has done extensive research in the area of neuroimaging, mapping brain structure and function as it relates to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. He received his medical degree from George Washington University in 1988 and completed his neurology residency at Boston University and a research fellowship in neurobehavior at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine, as well as a PhD in neuroscience from UCLA with emphasis in brain mapping. Upon finishing his studies at UCLA, Dr. Mega held many posts at the university – from 1999 to 2002, he served as the director of the Imaging Sub-core Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. Concurrently, he was the director of the Memory Disorders and Alzheimer’s disease Clinic, as well as an assistant professor in neurology.

Specific goals for this presentation:
1) Understand the diagnostic criteria for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
2)
Understand the difference in the memory loss of normal aging and that of early AD.
3)
Understand the rationale for using selective amyloid lower agents (SALAS) in patients with MCI and AD.
