The Changing Landscape of Dementia and Housing InsecurityThis event will feature two presenters--Richard Booth, RN, PhD, and Alan DeLaTorre, PhD. Each presenter will speak about the changing landscape of dementia and housing insecurity. Shifting Landscapes: The Evolving Intersection of Dementia and Homelessness in Ontario, CanadaThis presentation outlines the findings from a recent population-level study examining the intersection of dementia among individuals experiencing homelessness in Ontario, Canada. The growing prevalence of both dementia and homelessness highlights the urgent need for targeted policy and practice interventions. Our findings reveal a disproportionate prevalence of dementia among individuals experiencing homelessness, particularly at younger ages, underscoring the necessity for coordinated care, proactive screening, and stable housing policies. Given the poorer overall health and earlier dementia onset in this population, further research is urgently required to address their unique challenges effectively. Presenter:Richard Booth, RN, PhD, is an associate professor in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing at Western University; the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing Research Chair in Digitally-enabled Healthcare and Nursing; and, an Adjunct Scientist with the Primary Care & Health Systems Research group at ICES. As a clinician researcher with an active research program exploring psychiatric-mental health nursing and digital health, he has a particular interest in the use of emergent technologies in healthcare and their resulting intended and unintended consequences on practice and society-at-large. He currently holds various federal research grants, and supervises a range of graduate students at the masters and doctoral levels. Aging, Housing Insecurity & Homelessness: Perspectives and Approaches from PortlandThis presentation will highlight trends related to aging, housing and homelessness in Oregon, California, and the U.S. The speaker will provide information about growing challenges related to housing insecurity as people age and highlight trends related to Northwest Pilot Project's clientele and people living in Portland and Multnomah County. Audience members will learn about barriers to housing older adults and future directions that can address housing stability for older adults and people with disabilities. Presenter:Alan DeLaTorre, PhD, is a self-described “urban gerontologist” who has served as a researcher, instructor, and now affiliate faculty member at Portland State University’s Institute on Aging. Dr. DeLaTorre began working on Portland’s age-friendly efforts in 2006 and served as the City of Portland’s age-friendly program manager from 2019-2023. In 2024, Alan began working as a community builder for Northwest Pilot Project, where he collaborates with partners on aging-related issues and advocates for policy and systems change related to housing access and aging in place for low-income older adults. Intended Audience:The intended audience includes gerontologists, housing providers, housing service providers, student and faculty from higher education, policymakers, and anyone interested in understanding the trends related to population aging, housing, and homelessness.
