Practices for Understanding and Ending Ageism

In this workshop, we will consider ageism as a form of prejudice that intersects with other systems of discrimination. We will view the different levels at which ageism operates and the negative impact that internalized and institutionalized ageism has on individuals and society. We will explore perspectives and practices for understanding and addressing ageism, as well as for creating age-inclusive and age-equitable policies, programs and communities.

Intended audience:

This workshop is applied in focus and is intended for a diverse audience, including: participants of all ages and life-course stages who have a personal interest in the topic; students and educators; professionals working with older adults; and researchers, advocates and policy makers. All are welcome!

About the presenter:

An educational gerontologist for 25 years, Jenny Sasser, Ph.D., is currently part-time faculty in the Portland Community College Gerontology program where she teaches end-of-life practices; understanding and ending ageism; and adult development and aging. In addition to being a teacher and facilitator, Jenny is an activist and writer. One of her major ongoing projects is spearheading Aging: Concepts and Controversies, now in its 10th edition, for which she serves as co-author with Harry R. Moody. Jenny also convenes the Gero-Punk Project.

OGA is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. Events and donations are our main sources of income to fund our educational and networking programs.

Reduced or complementary event registration is one of the great benefits for OGA members! If you like our educational program - we strive to offer one event per month - becoming a member will pay off quickly! To learn more about OGA membership, please visit our Membership page.

However, we understand that many of us are struggling to make ends meet these days. No one will be turned away! If you cannot afford $5 at this moment, please contact us at [email protected] - thanks to the generous donations of OGA members and friends throughout the year, we can cover a small number of registrations for each event.
