Therapeutic Garden Spaces and Programming for Productive Aging

Intended audience: Anyone interested in therapeutic garden design, programming for therapeutic indoor and outdoor spaces, and how to get different disciplines involved in therapeutic space planning.

Melissa Bierman is a Horticulturist as well as a Registered Horticultural Therapist. For the past 21 years, she has worked in healthcare facilities to create, maintain, and install therapeutic landscapes. Melissa is the manager of the therapy team at Unity Center for Behavioral Health. She also teaches the six core classes required to become a therapeutic horticulture activity specialist at Portland Community College.

Brian Bainnson is a Landscape Architect with over 30 years experience in project planning and design on a wide range of institutional, commercial, governmental, recreational, and residential projects. In 1998, he led the Portland Memory Garden design team, developing an award-winning therapeutic garden for people with dementia, their families, and caregivers. Brian has since then designed many therapeutic gardens around the U.S., including gardens for Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed National Medical Center and Ft. Belvoir Medical Center. Most recently, he has been helping develop several therapeutic landscapes for Legacy Health System including gardens for the Oregon Burn Center, Legacy RIO, and the Legacy Trauma Center. All of these gardens are used for active patient therapy as well as restorative places for patients, families, and caregivers.


 Registration Fee

  • OGA members: Free!
  • Non-members: $10
  • Non-member students/seniors and registrants with limited financial means: $5

Why do we ask for a fee?

OGA is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. Events and donations are our main sources of income to fund our educational and networking programs.

Reduced or complementary event registration is one of the great benefits for OGA members! If you like our educational program - we strive to offer at least one event per month - becoming a member will pay off quickly! To learn more about OGA membership, please visit our Membership page.

However, we understand that many of us are struggling to make ends meet these days. No one will be turned away! If you cannot afford $5 at this moment, please contact us at [email protected] - thanks to the generous donations of OGA members and friends throughout the year, we can cover a small number of registrations for each event.
