Aging Veterans' Benefits in Oregon

Did you know that by 2025, Oregon is projected to be the home of over 140,000 veterans over the age of 65? Each of those veterans could be eligible for a wide variety of benefits that help reduce healthcare costs and improve health outcomes, including disability compensation and pension, health care, home loans, insurance, and burial. In addition to medical care, veterans can be eligible for nursing home, assisted living, and home -care services. This presentation is intended to raise awareness for professionals working with older adult veterans by providing a brief overview of state and federal veteran benefits and information on various resources that exist to help veterans access their earned benefits.

Presenters:

Sean O'Day has held a variety of senior level legal and management positions in both state and local government for over 25 years. Sean is currently the Deputy Director for the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services (DCBS), Oregon's largest worker and consumer protection agency. Prior to joining DCBS, he served as the Deputy Director of the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs (ODVA). Sean also currently serves as a Judge Advocate in the United States Army Reserve. A veteran himself, having served two tours in the middle east, prior to joining ODVA he did not fully appreciate the depth and breadth of benefits available to veterans. Whether it's striking up a conversation with someone wearing a veteran hat in the checkout line, or speaking in front of large audiences, Sean never passes up the opportunity to share the knowledge he has gained about the range of benefits available to veterans.

Intended Audience:

This presentation is appropriate for all professionals working with older adult veterans, whether in a long-term care or health care setting or a community center. It is also appropriate for educators, researchers, and students in the field of gerontology, sociology, social work, public health, and health sciences.
